How one well transformed an entire community

Access to clean water is the foundation for health, education, and opportunity. Yet, in many rural parts of Tanzania, families still struggle daily to secure safe drinking water. Amani Village was one such community, where the absence of a reliable water source affected nearly every aspect of life — from children’s education to family health and economic stability.

Before:

For generations, the residents of Amani Village faced a daily struggle: access to clean water. Women and children walked up to 4 hours each day to reach small ponds and rivers, where water was often contaminated. Illnesses like cholera and typhoid were common, and children frequently missed school because they were tasked with fetching water. What should have been a basic human right had become a heavy burden that shaped the lives of the entire community.

After:

Through Humo’s Clean Water Wells program, a solar-powered well was built in the center of the village, providing safe, running water all year round. Instead of walking miles, families can now collect water just a few minutes from their homes. Women have more time to focus on income-generating activities, and children are able to attend school regularly. The well has also become a gathering point, fostering stronger community bonds and improving the overall quality of life.

Result:

Today, over 1,200 villagers have reliable access to clean water. The rates of waterborne diseases have significantly dropped, school attendance has improved, and families no longer live with the daily uncertainty of where their water will come from. What was once a community weighed down by hardship is now a thriving village with hope for the future.
